Brentwood on the Beach Bed & Breakfast is a 10,000 square ft house with 9 guest rooms.

Brentwood on the Beach is the only upscale accommodation directly on the 375 km Lake Huron shoreline. Although Brentwood is a home away from home for many guests, it began as a private home -the retirement dream home of Bill and Jean Milne. They called the home Brentwood after the avenue on which they lived in Toronto. After Mr. Milne retired as vice-president from Woolworth they moved to St. Joseph Shores 1 to enjoy their many hobbies and to welcome family and friends. This home was a centre for family holidays throughout the seasons- filled with laughter, music, cooking and hobby sessions as well as offering a calm oasis for their family and friends.

The spirit of hospitality continued after Joan purchased the house from Mrs. Milne in 1989 and started welcoming guests in May of 1990. Joan provided a welcoming atmosphere and a place for guests to relax and recharge. She also catered to people who had experienced camping as a family or had a cottage that they could no longer maintain as well as those who grew up by the ocean and longed for a beach holiday.

Brentwood was built in 1976 by Jeffrey Bros. Construction of St. Joseph. Although the original footprint of the house remains the same, Jeffrey Bros. converted the original house from five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and three half bathrooms to nine guest bedrooms with nine ensuite bathrooms, each individually decorated with breathtaking views of the gardens and the lake. The summer kitchen became the indoor guest kitchen.

Peter arrived from Germany in December, 1994 to become Joan’s partner in life as well as in business. His energy, creativity and driving force created the expansive gardens, waterfalls and walkways as well as the stairs that lead guests to the sandy beach with its hammocks, chairs and fire pit.

There are photo albums that show the development of Brentwood and spotlight many of the wonderful guests of Brentwood over the years. Romance, friendship, creativity and relaxation are still the order of each day.

Each year, over the past 22 years they have re-invested back into the property. They added private ensuites bathrooms and fireplaces to all of the guest rooms and added balconies and patios to some of the guest rooms for added enjoyment of the outdoors and Lake Huron’s world-renowned sunsets. Walkways were added that lead past the gardens and the waterfall. There are ongoing renovations and upgrades yearly to create an experience that guests call “heaven on earth”. The indoor pool at Brentwood was converted to a salt
water pool and wall-to-wall windows were added along with a stamped, concrete heated floor surrounding the pool. The whirlpool was updated and the sauna upgraded to an infra-red.

During September 1998, they added Bayview Cottage on Princess Street with two bedrooms directly overlooking Lake Huron.
In April, 2010 they designed and built Upper Beach House Cottage across the lane from Bayview Cottage- a spacious, contemporary two- bedroom beach house that takes advantage of outdoor living with a view of the Lake. Both cottages are open year round.

Barbecues are a regular social event at Brentwood and in 2011, with the creation of a covered outdoor kitchen and dining area overlooking the lake; this became the newest gathering place for guests to
socialize. Peter has provided shaded areas at the beach with chairs, hammocks and pergolas. A total makeover of the extensive gardens and expanded waterfall has created what guests call the “wow” factor.

Peter and Joan have travelled extensively over their lifetime and enjoy welcoming guests from around the world.

Mark Stevens, a Travel Writer wrote that Brentwood “shows like a Caribbean resort”.

“As you sway in a hammock overlooking the beach and listen to a soothing waterfall, it’s hard to imagine a more relaxing place on the entire Lake Huron coastline.” London Free Press~ Hank Daniszewski
