Blackburn Radio covers an extremely wide area of geography throughout Ontario. In fact there are currently eleven stations (three in Wingham-Exeter, three in Sarnia, three in Chatham, one in Leamington and one in Windsor) with many employees. It is not easy to get together so when we do it’s critical that we are able to focus on the business at hand yet be relaxed enough to allow the ideas to flow.

In our business we attend many meetings, conventions and gatherings held by outside organizations in large facilities throughout the cities of Chatham, London and Toronto. These sites provide a suitable, convenient opportunity to do business. However, there are many distractions and at day’s end we usually go our separate ways for the night missing out on a valuable opportunity to build relationships, network and discuss the day’s events in a casual surrounding.

This note is to provide encouragement and support to you and your team at Brentwood on the Beach. Your facility provides an extraordinary opportunity to hold those meetings that matter most. Be it strategic or developmental in nature. You have developed through your hard work and unique touch the setting to be enjoyed by the business community and I encourage you go after it! There are just so many positives!

I find that one on one contact with you and Peter, as the owners of the facility, allows for quick and decisive action should a change in the agenda or direction of the meeting occur.

Your large spacious facility has two or three meeting areas that provide both privacy and a feeling of comfort due to the beautiful view that Lake Huron affords. Yet it does not compromise the need for technology and associated communication tools.

By virtue of the fact that your location resides in a residential area an hour from a major city keeps the group together and inspires a deeper connection. After a long day of meetings, individuals may relax by walking along the beach, sit in the hot tub, or swim in the indoor pool, they are all connected by the atmosphere generated throughout the property.

When “off site down time” is scheduled, Brentwood on the Beach is minutes from the charm provided by the small towns of Exeter and Bayfield. The uniqueness of these towns always is a hit. If you are a golfer (as is the case with many in my team) the course across the highway is challenging and well kept.

However, it must be said that one of the keys to holding a great meeting is making sure that there is great food! You, Peter and the team are outstanding in this area. Your planned menu, through consultation prior to the meeting, takes into account the dietary needs, and expressed tastes of all attendees and ensures that each is made to feel special.

In closing, I would say that none of this would matter if it weren’t for the caring nature of your team and the insistence that all attending enjoy their stay in a way that will leave them feeling rested, motivated and appreciated by both Brentwood on the Beach and the company for which they spend most of their waking day servings. With a happy motivated employee we make achieving our goals more rewarding.

As you sway in a hammock overlooking the beach and listen to a soothing waterfall, it’s hard to imagine a more relaxing place on the entire Lake Huron coastline.

It’s just one of the many comforts that’s made Brentwood on the Beach a favourite of the bed and breakfast set for 18 years.

Located on a quite residential court just off Highway 21, Brentwood on the Breach is halfway between Grand Bend and Bayfield.

It’s a sprawling suburban house with nine guest rooms, all with private bathrooms and some fireplaces, Jacuzzis and desks.

Proprietors Joan and Peter Karstens said the Brentwood has steadily evolved through the years with renovations and features to suite the guests.

“I learned from my guests what they wanted and what they needed,” said Joan.

Although it’s a bed and breakfast, it has many luxury hotel amenities including an indoor saltwater pool, sauna, hot tub and available spa treatments.

There are three guest sitting rooms, a guest kitchen, several balconies and a large dining room. A breakfast speciality is apple pancakes, prepared by Peter, a German immigrant.

Peter also landscaped a slope on the property into a waterfall spanned by a bridge and empties into a water lily pond.

Joan, an Exeter native, said many guests come back year after year and bring friends. Many are American fans of the Stratford Festival, or Europeans who discover the place online.

Unlike many other bed and breakfasts, Brentwood is a year-round establishment.

That's a key to its success because the beach season is short.

Through the autumn, winter and early spring, Brentwood plays host to weekend gatherings of quilting, scrapbook, and knitting enthusiasts. There are also mother-daughter spa getaways, marriage enrichment weekends and various reunions.

During the week it's available for business meetings.

Kathy Unruh of the Thread and Eye shop in London brings two groups of cross-stitch and embroidery enthusiasts to Brentwood in the fall and winter.

Despite its size and amenities, she says Brentwood never feels like a commercial inn.

A few years ago the Karstens developed a subsidiary business buying up and renting cottages.

One is located just across the street and four more are clustered together on nearby beachfront property. The cottages, which include a cosy log cabin and a large chalet-style home are available for rent or for sale .

Peter said the cottage cluster is a rare chance to create a family compound that can accommodate several generations and allow them to vacation together.

The first think Mom noticed was how immaculately clean your facilities, beach and lawns were.

People travelling to Stratford from the United States would be amazed by the easy, direct access to your place from Interstate 69, Canada Highway 402 and Ontario Highway 21.

Those of us who grew up beachcombing on southern Lake Michigan beaches would have a great time exploring your beach.

What a wonderful way to end a busy day of theatre and shopping in Stratford than to retire to your B&B on the beach after a short and direct drive.

I am a Registered Architect who practiced for 25 years and we did not see a single accommodation in the Stratford area that looked like a better place to stay than yours.

Truly, we were blown away by what we learned. It exceeded our expectations. The program was intensive but also relaxing. The love letters were challenging at first but they touched my innermost feelings.

Although we were advised not to attend if our marriage was in serious difficulty, we went anyway, thinking it could not make things worse; we were not communicating well and had never faced our hurts over the years. For the first time we had hope that if others also had challenges and had overcome them, we could too.

The vulnerability of the lead couples helped us not to feel alone. We learned skills to share our thoughts and feelings. We had fun and laughed again.

It has been four months since we attended and we can say that by applying what we learned, there have been lasting effects on our marriage. Our son noticed the difference right away. We know we still have areas of growth as we “climb up the mountain” but this weekend opened our eyes and hearts to see that our marriage can be better and more fulfilling when we take the time to tend to it and nourish it.

As we touched down in Toronto, after a 7 hour flight from Prague where we live, we wondered if we had done the right thing. We had another 1.5 hour trip to St. Josephs, located in southwest Ontario, between Bayfield and Grand Bend.

When we arrived, the sun was setting over the lake - and according to the books, Lake Huron is the scene of the second best sun set in the world. I have to say it was incredible. And was matched only by the warm greeting and on going help from the owners.

We were taken to our cottage - which is in the most perfect setting; sit yourself in a comfy chair on the lush green grass of the garden or the deck and look out onto the lake and sandy beach, which can be accessed in only minutes by some steps.

The cottage itself is very comfortable, well equipped and none of us wanted to leave after our 5 day stay. There are lots of places to visit and things to do, so our 2 teenagers did not get bored. Our family highlight has to be making a fire on the sandy beach, listening to the water of the lake and watching the sun go down. Truly memorable.

My husband Ray and I loved to visit Brentwood and almost always stayed in the Bluewater Room. Everywhere at Brentwood is warm, relaxing and very beautiful, but the Bluewater Room was special to us.

We loved to hear the peaceful and relaxing trickle of the tiny waterfall at night and seeing the water in the moonlight. We loved the proximity of the bridge, where we would often stand and look at the magnificent sunsets. We lovingly called it Ray's bridge, he loved to be on it. We also loved that we had a lovely private patio to sit on and would chat and sunbathe with good friends we had met there.

After my husband died, I still love to return to the Bluewater Room and remember the wonderful vacations and the loving support and friendship from Joan and Peter. It certainly is a place I feel privileged to have found and been a part of.

My husband Steve and I were attending and working on the plays at Stratford Shakespeare Festival in August of 2008, and by our luck found Brentwood-on-the-Beach on Lake Huron, a short and beautiful drive from Stratford, for a short overnight stay.

We were so lucky also to be able to reserve and stay in the gorgeous and extremely comfortable Brentwood suite, which included not only an exquisite and private lake view with our own balcony, but one of the most exquisite and impressive bathroom "experiences" I have seen in a private home (not an estate).

Joan has taken meticulous care in creating a "haven" as part of the suite, which includes an expansive pink-themed luxury bathroom with pink and gold fixtures, including bath, shower and bidet.

Steve and I really enjoyed the accommodations and homey atmosphere, wonderful breakfast and especially the proximity to wonderful Lake Huron with its calm and lovely beach.

We napped in the hammocks that swung in the trees over the sand and truly rested in serenity! We certainly didn't want to leave and will most assuredly be back!

The Huron Room is my favourite out of all the rooms I’ve stayed in at Brentwood (so far I’ve sampled four). Each room at Brentwood has its own special personality, due to their differing locations in the house, different outlooks and their unique décor.

In the mornings, I’d open our window and look out on the delightful water-garden feature and the lake beyond. Listening to the waterfall was a great way to be lulled into an afternoon nap or a restful night’s sleep.

The window seat and fireplace adds additional charm and I love the beach-like golds in the bed linens and wall colour, the celery-coloured towels and deep coloured wood furniture.

It’s all very Zen.

Thank you once again for your hospitality and a most memorable vacation. The sunsets over Brentwood are always memorable, but this past Wednesday night's sunset was absolutely breathtaking. We love the long, clean beach, the formations of Canada Geese, the starry sky, the fireplace and the Jacuzzi.

The first think Mom noticed was how immaculately clean your facilities, beach and lawns were.

People travelling to Stratford from the United States would be amazed by the easy, direct access to your place from Interstate 69, Canada Highway 402 and Ontario Highway 21.

Those of us who grew up beachcombing on southern Lake Michigan beaches would have a great time exploring your beach.

What a wonderful way to end a busy day of theatre and shopping in Stratford than to retire to your B&B on the beach after a short and direct drive.

I am a Registered Architect who practiced for 25 years and we did not see a single accommodation in the Stratford area that looked like a better place to stay than yours.

Dear Joan and Peter: A special second trip for us in 2010 for this weekend and the premier of Paul Ciufo's new play at Blyth. You thought of everything!! From the usual superb breakfasts to dinner on Saturday night at Brentwood and Sunday brunch with Paul, it was a total package. Of course we loved the play. It was our first trip to the Blyth Festival and we so enjoyed the church supper prior to the play. What a treat to know that all was within walking distance in Blyth and that we were certain to get to the theater on time. The real beauty of Brentwood lies in the many friendships we have made there. Sharing the weekend with you and Pete and Tee meant the world to us. Thank you for being the heart and soul of Brentwood and for providing us with such a special time.
